GoodWe Error 13 — Over Temperature
What it means: The inverter is too hot inside and has derated or shut down to protect itself. GoodWe gives three causes and all three are about where the unit lives, not what is wrong with it — air temperature around the inverter too high for an extended period, an installation location without enough airflow for the cooling system to work, and obstruction of airflow around the inverter. The ET-series manual adds two more, an ambient above 60 C and a fault in the internal fan.
Why does GoodWe show 13?
- Ambient air temperature around the inverter too high for an extended period
- Installation location with insufficient airflow for the cooling system to work
- Obstruction of airflow around the inverter — clearances not met, cupboard doors, stored goods
- Cooling fins blocked with dust
- A fault in the internal cooling fan on fan-cooled models
The Pakistan factor
Over temperature is the most predictable GoodWe fault in Pakistan and the most self-inflicted. Ambient in Multan, Sukkur, Jacobabad or Lahore in June routinely sits where the inverter has no thermal headroom left, and GoodWe's hybrids are rated to +60 C at the case, which is a specification, not a promise about a sealed store room. Three local habits cause most of it — mounting the inverter on an unshaded west wall, putting it in a closed room with the battery bank directly beneath it so the two heat each other, and never once clearing dust out of the fins. Note also that a unit which derates rather than trips will look like an underperforming system rather than a fault, so if your generation collapses every afternoon and recovers by evening, check the temperature before you blame the panels.
How to fix it (safe to try yourself)
- Bring the surrounding temperature down. GoodWe's first listed remedy is exactly this. Shade is the cheapest fix there is — a west-facing wall with no shade will cook any inverter in a Pakistani June.
- Check the clearances against your own manual and restore them. GoodWe requires enough space for the cooling system to function, and a hybrid wedged into a closed store room with a battery bank underneath it has none.
- Check that nothing is obstructing airflow around the unit or sitting in the cooling fins. Clear the fins dry, with compressed air or a soft brush. Never spray water near the heatsink and never run the unit with a fan cover or filter improvised over the intake.
- Switch the inverter off for 15 minutes and start it up again. This is GoodWe's own step four and it is the end of the owner-level path.
- If ventilation and ambient temperature are both normal and 13 keeps returning, the ET manual is explicit — contact the dealer or after-sales service, because that pattern points at the internal fan. Do not open the inverter to inspect or replace a fan yourself.
