Growatt SPF 08 — DC Bus Over-Voltage
What it means: The internal high-voltage DC bus that links the battery and PV stages to the inverter output has gone above its limit. Growatt's off-grid service guide gives the exact trip condition — bus voltage above 510 V for 20.8 ms, or above 500 V for one second — and calls it an interaction between the inverter and the battery. It is an internal measurement, not a reading of your battery or your panel voltage. But do not assume it is always a hardware failure: on the SPF3000/5000TL HVM, Growatt's own troubleshooting guide lists a battery that cannot communicate with the inverter as one of the two causes, and gives a firmware update and a set of charging-parameter changes before any board is replaced.
Why does Growatt show 08?
- A damaged DC-DC diode or driver circuit, which is Growatt's first listed cause on the SPF3000/5000TL HVM and the likely one when 08 returns every few hours
- A battery that cannot establish communication with the inverter — Growatt's second listed cause, and the reason the fix ladder starts with firmware and settings rather than with a board
- Firmware behaviour on some units, which is why a firmware update appears before any board replacement in both of Growatt's guides
- PV string configuration outside what the model expects — Growatt's last check for 08 on the SPF5000TL HVM is the panel layout
The Pakistan factor
The version of 08 worth knowing about locally is the one that follows a battery change. Growatt lists "battery can't build communication with inverter" as a cause of 08, and Pakistan runs on locally assembled lithium packs whose BMS often speaks no protocol the inverter recognises — so a tubular-to-lithium retrofit can produce 08 without a single component having failed. If your 08 started within days of a new pack going in, say that first, because it changes the diagnosis from a board replacement to a settings and firmware job. Note also that 08 is not the same fault as warning 13, which is the code Growatt uses when the solar charger stops on high PV voltage. If someone tells you to restring the roof for an 08, ask which code they actually read off the screen — though be aware Growatt does list a panel-configuration check as the last step for 08 on the SPF5000TL HVM, so it is not a question that can be dismissed outright either.
How to fix it
- Note how often it happens, what was running at the time, and whether it started after a battery was changed or added. A single 08 that clears on restart is a different problem from 08 every few hours. This pattern is the first thing your installer will ask for.
- Safe for a homeowner — restart once, in the right order. Turn off the AC output breaker, then the PV isolator, then the battery breaker. Wait three minutes for the internal capacitors to discharge. Power back up in the reverse order. Growatt's own first step is a complete power-down until the LCD is blank.
- Safe for a homeowner — check whether a BMS communication alarm (20, or 33) is showing alongside 08, and whether program 05 matches the battery you actually own. Growatt lists a battery that cannot talk to the inverter as a cause of 08, so that pairing is worth recording before anyone quotes you for a board.
- Ask your installer about the firmware update before any board replacement. Growatt puts it ahead of hardware in both guides, so it is the cheap step to try first.
- Growatt also documents a settings remedy for 08 on the SPF3000/5000TL HVM — reduced charge current on program 02 and specific bulk and float voltages on programs 19 and 20. Raise this with your installer rather than dialling it in yourself. Those are battery-charging voltages, and the profile Growatt gives for this fault is a lead-acid one that is wrong for a lithium pack.
- Do not open the inverter and do not attempt to measure the bus voltage yourself. The DC bus sits in the 400 to 500 V range and its capacitors hold a lethal charge for minutes after everything is switched off. This is the most dangerous point inside the unit.
- Repeated 08 after the firmware update and the settings check points at the mainboard or the control board. That is a service-centre repair with the unit isolated, not a field fix. Stop here and call your installer or Growatt service.
