Growatt SPF 20 — BMS Communication Error

What it means: The inverter cannot exchange data with the lithium battery's BMS. Growatt gives one cause in its guide — the battery's communication protocol does not match what the inverter expects. The pack itself may be perfectly healthy. What has failed is the conversation between the two, so the inverter has no state of charge, no cell data and no charge or discharge limits from the pack, and falls back to a default profile.

Why does Growatt show 20?

Very common in Pakistan because of how mixed the local lithium market is. Packs assembled in Lahore and Karachi from imported cells often carry a generic BMS that presents no protocol Growatt recognises, and a shop that sells the pack as Growatt-compatible may only have tested that it charges, not that it communicates. The result is a system that appears to work for months while running on a default lead-acid style voltage profile. That is the real risk here, not the alarm itself — no cell balancing, no temperature-based charge limiting, in a country where a battery cabinet regularly sits above 45 °C. If your pack raised 20 the day it was installed and nobody resolved it, treat it as unfinished installation work and go back to whoever fitted it.

How to fix it

  1. Check whether warning 04 is showing at the same time. Growatt calls out the 04 and 20 pair specifically and treats the communication failure as the root cause, so fixing this usually clears the false low-battery reading with it.
  2. Safe for a homeowner — confirm program 05 matches the battery you actually own, not the battery the system was originally sold with. If you were upgraded from tubular to lithium and this was left on USE, that alone will produce 20.
  3. Safe for a homeowner — look at the communication cable between inverter and battery. Is it seated at both ends, is it in the CAN or RS485 port the battery manual specifies, and is it the cable the battery supplier provided rather than an ordinary network patch lead?
  4. Do not open the battery, do not remove the BMS cover, and do not try to reset the BMS by shorting terminals or disconnecting cells. On a lithium pack the BMS is the only protection standing between a cell fault and a fire.
  5. The firmware upgrade Growatt describes must be done by your installer or the battery supplier with the correct tool, and needs a factory reset afterwards. A failed firmware write leaves you with a dead inverter. Do not download firmware from a forum link.
  6. If the setting is right, the cable is right and firmware is current, then the pack and the inverter are simply not compatible. That is a supplier conversation, not a repair. Do not run a lithium pack long term with the BMS unable to communicate — the inverter is charging blind, with no cell voltages and no temperature limits from the pack.
