Knox Krypton Fault 02 — Over Temperature (Internal Component Above 100°C)
What it means: The inverter has measured an internal component above 100°C and shut down to protect itself. Knox Krypton hybrids are rebadged Voltronic Power InfiniSolar units — an identification that comes from retailer listings and an exact specification match, never from Knox itself — and the InfiniSolar V IV fault table gives code 02 as "Over temperature", with the troubleshooting table stating plainly that the "Internal temperature of inverter component is over 100°C" and giving one instruction — check whether the airflow of the unit is blocked or whether the ambient temperature is too high. Nothing has necessarily failed. In the great majority of Pakistani cases this is a siting and airflow problem, not a broken inverter, and it is one of the few faults a homeowner can genuinely fix. Like code 01, it appears twice — a flashing 02 is a warning while the unit is still running, a solid 02 with the red fault light is a shutdown.
Why does Knox show 02?
- Ambient temperature above the unit's rated operating range — the InfiniSolar V IV spec sheet gives -10°C to 50°C
- Airflow blocked at the intake or the exhaust, most often by a cupboard door, a shelf, a curtain or stacked boxes
- The anti-dust kit's air filter foam clogged with dust, which the manual asks you to clean monthly
- A fan that is not turning — if you also see code 01, fix that first, because 02 is its consequence
- Direct sun on the wall the inverter is mounted on, especially a west-facing exterior wall
- Running continuously near full rated load through the hottest part of the day
The Pakistan factor
Over-temperature is a seasonal fault here, and the season is May to September. The InfiniSolar V IV platform is rated to 50°C ambient, and a closed store room in Jacobabad, Sibi or Multan is regularly past that before you add the inverter's own waste heat. The standard Pakistani installation mistake is to mount the inverter where it will not be seen — inside a cupboard, in a stairwell cubby, behind a door — and then close the door. The second mistake is stacking it directly above a battery bank, which is itself a heat source and which blocks the intake. Dust compounds both: the anti-dust filter foam that Voltronic asks you to clean every month is, in most Pakistani homes, cleaned never. There is also a load-shedding pattern worth recognising. When mains returns after a long outage, everything in the house starts at once and the inverter runs hard for an hour or two at exactly the time of day when the room is hottest, which is why so many 02 trips cluster in the late afternoon. Finally, check your model before matching this code. The Knox range runs from the LCD Krypton 5600 to the 7-inch touchscreen Krypton 9055, and the newer touchscreen generation is not guaranteed to use the same code table — read the manual that came in your box.
How to fix it (safe to try yourself)
- Safe for a homeowner — do not immediately restart it. Let it cool. An inverter that has just tripped on over-temperature is genuinely hot inside, and cycling it back on straight away only puts the same heat back into components that have not shed the last lot.
- Safe for a homeowner — look at where it is mounted. You need clear air in and clear air out. A Knox in a sealed cupboard, in a closed store room, above a battery bank with no clearance, or on a west-facing wall that takes the afternoon sun will show 02 by its second summer. Opening the cupboard, adding a vent, or moving the unit to a shaded internal wall fixes more 02 faults in Pakistan than any repair.
- Safe for a homeowner — check the exhaust is not blowing straight into a wall or a corner. Hot air that has nowhere to go gets drawn back into the intake, and the inverter slowly heats its own supply of cooling air.
- Safe for a homeowner, with the unit fully powered down — clean the anti-dust kit. Switch off the AC output breaker, then the PV isolator, then the battery breaker, give it a few minutes to settle, then remove the top screws, lift the dustproof case, take out the air filter foam, clean it and the case, and re-assemble. Use dry compressed air on the heatsink fins. Never spray water near the case.
- Safe for a homeowner — reduce load through the hottest hours if 02 only appears at peak. An inverter running at 90% of rating at 2 pm in June in Multan has very little thermal headroom left.
- Stop here if any of the following is true, and call a qualified technician. Code 02 appears with the room genuinely cool and the airflow genuinely clear. It appears alongside code 01. It comes back within minutes of a cold start. Or you can smell hot varnish or burnt insulation. Those are a failing fan, a blocked internal thermal path or a power stage that is generating heat it should not be, and none of them is an owner fix.
- Do not open the inverter to "clean it out" or to point a desk fan at the board. The front cover is not owner-serviceable and the DC bus capacitors behind it hold a lethal charge after shutdown.
