Knox Krypton Fault 11 — PV Voltage Is Over (Solar String Above the DC Input Limit)

What it means: The solar array is presenting a DC voltage above what the inverter's input is rated to withstand, so it has disconnected from the array. Knox Krypton hybrids are rebadged Voltronic Power InfiniSolar units — an identification that comes from retailer listings and an exact specification match, never from Knox itself — and the InfiniSolar V IV fault table gives code 11 as "PV voltage is over". The threshold depends on your model and this matters. The InfiniSolar V IV manual covers the 3.6KW and 5.6KW together and says "Solar input voltage is more than 450V" in its troubleshooting table — but its own specification table gives a 500 VDC maximum PV array open-circuit voltage for the 3.6KW and 450 VDC for the 5.6KW, so even inside that one manual the figure is not single-valued. The InfiniSolar V IV TWIN 6KW manual instead says "Solar input voltage is more than 500V", against a 500 VDC specification. Knox's own product pages for the Krypton 9000 and Krypton 9055, both TWIN-platform models, list a maximum DC voltage of 500 VDC with an MPPT operating window of 120 to 430 VDC. So do not assume 450 V. Check the figure for your model. What the code means in every case is the same: too many panels are wired in series for this input, and no setting will fix it.

Why does Knox show 11?

Code 11 is a winter fault in a country where solar is sold on summer performance, and that mismatch is exactly what causes it. Panel open-circuit voltage rises as cell temperature falls. A string that sits comfortably at 400 volts on a 42°C June afternoon in Multan can climb past 450 or even 500 volts at seven in the morning on a cold, clear January day in Islamabad, Quetta, Abbottabad or Skardu. Because most Pakistani systems are commissioned in spring or summer, the installer sees a comfortable reading, signs off, and the fault arrives five months later when he is long gone and the customer blames the inverter. The colder and higher your location, the worse the margin: northern Punjab, KP and Balochistan see this far more than Karachi. Two local practices make it more likely. The first is adding panels to an existing system without recalculating the string — the common upgrade when a household adds an air conditioner. The second is the mixed array, where panels of a different model are added to an existing string during a repair or a warranty replacement, quietly changing the string's open-circuit voltage. One identification caution: the Knox range spans several generations with different DC limits, from the LCD Krypton 5600 to the touchscreen Krypton 9055, so check the label on your own unit rather than a figure quoted in a WhatsApp group. And treat the DC side of a solar system with the respect it deserves — it is the part of a rooftop installation that kills people in Pakistan, usually during unqualified maintenance.

How to fix it

  1. Safe for a homeowner — read the PV voltage on the display and note the time and the date. Code 11 has a signature. It fires in the early morning, on cold clear days, in December, January and February, and clears as the panels warm up. If your log looks like that, you are looking at a string that was sized against summer numbers.
  2. Safe for a homeowner — find the number for your own model before anyone tells you what it is. The maximum PV array open-circuit voltage is on the inverter label and in your manual, and Knox publishes it on the product pages for the current Krypton models. It is not the same across the range.
  3. Safe for a homeowner — check whether panels were added, moved or replaced recently. Code 11 appearing after work on the roof, or in the first winter after a summer installation, points straight at the string layout.
  4. That is where the owner's job ends, and the reason is not caution for its own sake. A solar string at 400 to 500 volts DC is lethal, it cannot be switched off by the inverter, and it is live whenever there is light on the panels. DC arcs do not self-extinguish the way AC arcs do. Do not open the DC isolator enclosure, do not unplug an MC4 connector, do not disconnect a string, and do not go on the roof to count panels while the array is generating.
  5. Do not try to clear code 11 by restarting. Repeated restarts put the over-voltage back across the input stage every time, and unlike an overload this is not a condition the inverter can ride out. Turn the DC isolator off and leave the system down until an installer can look at it.
  6. Qualified installer, from here, and the fix is physical. Panels have to come out of the series string and be re-arranged, so that the string's open-circuit voltage at the coldest temperature your site sees stays below the inverter's maximum. Ask him to do the calculation with the panel's temperature coefficient and your local winter minimum, not with today's reading. Ask to see the number.
  7. Ask about the MPPT window at the same time. The Krypton TWIN models track between 120 and 430 VDC even though they tolerate up to 500 VDC, so a string can sit legally under the damage limit and still spend cold mornings above the tracking window, producing nothing while showing no fault at all. Re-arranging the string is the moment to fix both.
