Fronus Fault 04 — Battery Voltage Too Low
What it means: The battery bank has fallen to the inverter's low DC cut-off and the inverter has shut down to stop the battery being discharged any further. Fronus's specification table puts that cut-off at 20.5 V on a 24 V unit and 41.0 V on a 48 V unit when the load is under 50%, dropping to 20.0 V / 40.0 V at half load or more. The same number appears first as warning 04, "Low battery", beeping once a second, at 22.0 V / 44.0 V light-load or 21.0 V / 42.0 V heavy-load. This is a protection doing its job, not a broken inverter — the question is why the bank got that low.
Why does Fronus show 04?
- Simply not enough charge in — extended load shedding, a run of cloudy days, or a solar array too small for the household load
- A battery bank at the end of its life, or one weak cell or block dragging the whole string down under load
- Charging current set too low to recover the bank in the mains window available — program 02 (total charging current) defaults to 60 A and program 11 (utility charging current) to 30 A
- Loose, corroded or undersized battery cables and terminals, which make the bank read far lower under load than it actually is
- More load connected than the bank can carry for the backup time expected of it
- The low DC cut-off in program 29 set higher than the bank can practically sustain
- Output source priority set so the utility rarely or never charges the bank
The Pakistan factor
Load shedding makes this the most-seen code on any Pakistani hybrid, and it does real damage rather than just annoying people. A tubular bank taken to cut-off night after night through a summer of six-hour outages ages years in months, and the shorter backup that follows is read as "the inverter is weak" when the batteries were simply never given a full charge between outages. Two local habits make it worse. First, banks are sized for the price rather than for the autonomy, so cut-off is reached most nights by design. Second, the charge current is often left at the default while the available mains window is short — the bank then lives permanently part-charged, which is the fastest way to kill lead-acid. If your 04 appears earlier each month, the bank is telling you it is going, and no setting will argue with that.
How to fix it (safe to try yourself)
- Switch off heavy appliances first. Every amp you remove raises the measured bank voltage and gets you back above the cut-off sooner.
- Let it charge and watch the number. Turn the AC input breaker on so the utility charger can work, or wait for good sun, and read the battery voltage on the inverter display as it climbs. If it rises steadily and holds, the bank was simply flat.
- Check the charging settings before blaming the battery — program 02 (total charging current, 60 A default), program 11 (utility charging current, 30 A default) and program 05 (battery type). A bank being charged at 30 A during a two-hour mains window may never recover, and that looks exactly like a dead battery.
- Inspect the battery terminals visually, with the system shut down — green or white powder, discolouration from heat, a nut you can see is not seated. Report what you see. Do not tighten, clean or move a battery terminal yourself; battery banks deliver enough fault current to weld a spanner.
- If the bank charges up fully and then drops straight back to 04 under a modest load, the battery is the problem rather than the settings. That is the manufacturer's own ladder for this condition — recharge the battery, and if that does not hold, replace it.
- On a lithium bank, a repeating 04 is often the BMS disconnecting on low cell voltage or on cell imbalance, with the inverter simply seeing the pack vanish — check whether the display is also showing bP, "battery is not connected". Do not open the pack, do not bypass the BMS, and do not treat a repeated BMS cut-out as something to reset your way out of. It is a symptom. Ask the installer to read the individual cell voltages through the BMS communication port.
- If the inverter shows nothing at all when you try to start it, or lights up for about three seconds and then dies completely, stop here. Fronus attributes those two behaviours to a bank below 1.4 V and 1.91 V per cell respectively, and to a tripped internal fuse — and it says to contact a repair centre to replace that fuse. The fuse is inside the machine and is not a homeowner item.
