Fronus Fault 05 — Output Short Circuit or Converter Over-Temperature

What it means: One code, two genuinely different faults. Fronus's fault table defines 05 as "Output short circuited or over temperature is detected by internal converter components", and its troubleshooting chart splits it: either the AC output has been shorted — check the wiring and remove the abnormal load — or the temperature of an internal converter component has passed 120 °C, in which case the airflow is blocked or the room is too hot. The short-circuit branch is the dangerous one. It means a fault in your house wiring or in an appliance, and until it has been found and fixed it is a fire and shock hazard.

Why does Fronus show 05?

The Pakistan factor

Two local conditions load the dice towards the dangerous half of this code. The first is wiring: a great many inverter installations here are extended informally afterwards — a room added, a motor put on the backup circuit, an extension board run out to a shop front — in cable that was never sized or protected for it, and often with no RCD anywhere in the house to catch an earth fault before the inverter does. The second is water and vermin: monsoon damp getting into an outdoor junction box, and rodents in roof spaces chewing PVC, are ordinary rather than unusual causes of a genuine short. The thermal branch of 05 has its own Pakistani flavour — both volume series are IP21 indoor units rated to 50 °C ambient, and an internal converter component reaching 120 °C is entirely achievable in an unventilated pump room in June. Note also that Fronus publishes no warranty term for its inverters, so if a short circuit outside the machine damages the machine, expect to argue about who pays.

How to fix it

  1. Turn the AC output breaker off and leave it off. Do not go hunting for a short by switching the output back on and watching for a spark or listening for the trip. That is how people get burnt.
  2. Look for the dangerous and obvious first, without touching anything — burning smell, scorch marks around a socket, a melted plug or extension board, water where a cable enters a box, an MCB or RCD that has tripped alongside. If you find any of those, stop at this step. Leave the circuit dead and call a qualified electrician. Do not re-energise to "just check".
  3. Rule out the thermal half of the code before assuming a short. If the room is very hot, the vents are blocked, or fault or warning 01 is showing because the fan is dead, the 05 may be the 120 °C converter branch instead. Let the unit cool, clear the airflow, and see whether fault 02 is also appearing.
  4. If nothing is visibly wrong, unplug every appliance on the inverter output — everything, including the ones you are sure about. Then attempt a restart with no load connected.
  5. If it runs clean with nothing connected, restore the load one circuit at a time at the breaker, waiting between each, until it trips. The circuit that trips it is the one to hand to the electrician. Stop there and do not put that circuit back on.
  6. Never bridge, tape down, or replace with a larger rating any breaker or RCD that keeps tripping, and never remove the inverter's output terminal cover to "check the wiring". A protection that keeps operating is doing precisely what it exists to do, and defeating it turns a tripped inverter into a house fire.
  7. If 05 returns with every load unplugged and the machine cool, the fault is inside the inverter and there is nothing left for you to do safely. Take it to a Fronus service centre — 17 are published with addresses and phone numbers across four provinces.
