GoodWe Error 09 / 17 / 29 — Utility Loss (no grid detected)
What it means: The inverter cannot see a valid utility supply, so it has disconnected from the grid and is running your back-up output from PV and battery alone. GoodWe groups three alarm numbers under one entry — 09, 17 and 29, listed as Utility Loss, ac Failure and FAC Failure — because they all mean the same thing to you. The most common cause is simply that the grid is off, and the alarm clears by itself once mains returns.
Why does GoodWe show 09?
- Utility grid power has failed — during load shedding this is normal behaviour, not a fault
- The AC circuit breaker feeding the inverter is off or has tripped
- An AC termination has worked loose somewhere along the AC path
- The AC breaker itself has failed
- L and N are in the wrong terminals (a commissioning fault, not a wear fault)
- Grid frequency outside the window set by the Safety Country parameter, which is the FAC Failure half of this group
The Pakistan factor
This is the single most-reported GoodWe "fault" in Pakistan and most of the time it is not a fault at all — it is load shedding, and the inverter is doing exactly what you bought it for. Two versions are worth separating. If 09 appears and clears with the outage schedule, ignore it. If 09 sits there while your neighbours have power, the problem is on your side of the meter — usually a tripped or failed AC breaker, or a heat-loosened AC termination in a DB that has never been re-torqued. The FAC Failure member of this group also fires on genuinely unstable feeders and on units commissioned with the wrong Safety Country, which is common on grey-import inverters. Note that on a GoodWe hybrid the number itself only appears in the SolarGo or PV Master app, and GoodWe puts alarm reading on installer and technician accounts — so you may need your dealer to read you the code before you can act on it.
How to fix it (safe to try yourself)
- Check whether the grid is genuinely off. Neighbours, a mains-only light, or the load shedding schedule will tell you in ten seconds. GoodWe states the alarm clears automatically once the grid supply is restored, so if this is an outage there is nothing to fix and nothing to reset.
- Check the AC circuit breaker that feeds the inverter. If it has tripped, switch it back on once. If it trips again immediately, stop — a breaker that will not hold is telling you about a fault downstream, not about the inverter.
- If mains is present and the breaker is on, GoodWe's next step is a single controlled power cycle. Switch the AC breaker off, wait a full five minutes, then switch it back on. Do this once. Repeated switching is not a diagnosis.
- Everything past this point is installer work. GoodWe's remaining steps are to measure the voltage at the AC terminals with a multimeter, confirm every termination along the AC path is tight, and verify L and N are in the correct terminals. That means working at the inverter's AC terminal block. Do not open the AC terminal cover yourself — it is live from the grid side even when the inverter is off.
- Ask your installer to also confirm the Safety Country setting matches Pakistan. Both the ES and EM manuals make this step one for the frequency half of this fault (FAC Failure) — a wrong country code turns an ordinary local grid into a permanent alarm, and it is a five-minute app fix for whoever holds the installer account.
- If the grid is healthy, the breaker holds, and 09 still latches after one clean power cycle, stop and contact your installer or the GoodWe service centre. Do not open the inverter.
