Growatt SPF 05 — Output Short Circuit

What it means: The inverter detected a short circuit on its AC output and shut down. Growatt's service guide separates two cases. Either the short is in the load wiring outside the inverter, or it is inside the unit — if the AC output terminals still show continuity with the inverter switched off and the screen dark, the short is internal, and Growatt attributes that to damaged MOSFETs or IGBTs in the output stage.
Why does Growatt show 05?
- A genuine short in the load wiring — a damaged appliance flex, a nail or screw driven through a wall cable, a crushed conduit
- Water ingress into an outdoor junction box, socket or distribution board
- Rodent damage to output cabling in a roof space or duct
- Failed output-stage MOSFETs or IGBTs inside the inverter, which Growatt gives as the usual cause when the short is internal
The Pakistan factor
Monsoon water getting into outdoor distribution boards, surface-mounted sockets and rooftop conduit is the most common trigger here, followed by rodents in roof spaces. Two local habits make 05 more dangerous than it needs to be. The first is running inverter output through an unfused changeover switch, so a short has no local protection between the fault and the inverter. The second is a house wired without a working earth and without an RCD, which removes the second line of defence exactly when you need it. If your inverter shows 05 and your distribution board has no RCD, treat that as a separate job worth doing regardless of how this fault resolves.
How to fix it
- Stop and switch off first. Turn off the AC output breaker at the distribution board before doing anything else. A live short is a fire and shock hazard, and every restart attempt pushes fault current through whatever is shorted.
- Safe for a homeowner — with the output breaker off, look but do not touch. A scorched socket, a melted plug, a soaked junction box, a chewed cable, a burning smell. If you find any of these, your part is finished. Call a qualified electrician.
- Safe for a homeowner — unplug appliances. Growatt's first diagnostic step is to disconnect the load and see whether 05 clears.
- Finding the faulty circuit by restoring power one breaker at a time is electrician's work, not homeowner work. Ask them to do it with the inverter off and an insulation test, rather than by repeatedly re-energising a suspected short.
- If 05 persists with every load disconnected, the short is inside the inverter. Do not open it and do not test its output terminals yourself. Isolate the system — AC output off, PV isolator off, battery breaker off — and call Growatt service or your installer.
- Never bypass the inverter to get the lights back by connecting house wiring straight to the grid around a suspected short. The short does not go away, and you have removed the device that detected it.
