Growatt Error 203 — PV Isolation (Insulation) Too Low

⚠ DANGER — this fault involves lethal voltage. Do not attempt a DIY fix. Call a qualified technician.

What it means: The inverter measured the insulation resistance between the DC solar side and earth and found it too low, so it refused to start or disconnected. In plain terms, current can leak from your array to earth somewhere. Growatt lists this as Error 203 "PV isolation Low" on the MOD and MID three-phase range, and as the "PV Isolation Low" message on the older TL and MTL range. On both, the first checks are whether the PV modules and the inverter are properly grounded. This is a genuine electrical safety protection, not a nuisance alarm.

Why does Growatt show 203?

Monsoon is the season for this fault across Punjab and KP, and coastal humidity and salt around Karachi do the same job slowly all year round. Two local installation habits make it much more likely. The first is DC cable run in unsealed PVC conduit or clipped straight to a parapet in full sun, which perishes the insulation within a few seasons. The second is array frames earthed to a token rod, or not earthed at all, because nothing enforces an inspection. Rodents in roof spaces and overflowing rooftop water tanks running onto conduit are the other two common causes. If your house also has no proper earth at the main distribution board, treat 203 as urgent rather than seasonal — an insulation fault plus no earth reference is exactly the combination that puts live voltage on a metal frame that somebody can touch. One thing to check before you match this page to your screen: on the MOD and MID range Growatt uses the number 203 twice. Error 203 is the insulation fault described here. Warning 203 is a different fault — a short in the PV1 or PV2 wiring. Read whether your display says Error or Warning, because the two are not the same job, and tell your installer which one you saw.

How to fix it

  1. Safe for a homeowner — note the pattern. An isolation fault that appears at sunrise or after rain and clears once the roof dries is almost always water ingress, and telling your installer that is the most useful thing you can do.
  2. Safe for a homeowner — from the ground, look for the obvious. A hanging DC cable, a conduit that has come away from the wall, a junction box with its lid off, a visibly chewed cable.
  3. Do not go on the roof and do not touch DC cabling, connectors or module frames to investigate. A live array sits at several hundred volts DC in daylight, an insulation fault means that voltage may be finding a path to earth, and the frames or the mounting rail may be live. DC arcs do not self-extinguish. This is the fault where people get hurt.
  4. Do not clear it by switching the inverter off and on until it passes. On a dry afternoon it will start with the fault still present, and you will then be running an array with a known earth leakage and no warning on the screen.
  5. Call a qualified solar installer. Ask them to insulation-test each string with the array isolated, and to verify the earthing of the array frames and of the inverter. Growatt makes grounding the first check on both product ranges, so that is where they should start.
  6. If the strings and the earthing both test clean and the fault remains, Growatt escalates to its service department. Do not let anyone disable the isolation check to keep the system generating.
