Growatt SPF 56 — Battery Connection Open
What it means: The inverter can no longer see a battery on its DC terminals. Growatt's service guide gives two very different causes. Either the battery's own BMS has opened its internal MOSFET and disconnected the pack as a protection action — most often because the charging current set on the inverter is too high for that battery — or a fuse on the inverter mainboard has blown.
Why does Growatt show 56?
- Charge current set too high for the pack. Growatt states that too large a charging current on program 02 causes BMS protection, which shuts the MOSFET inside the battery and opens the connection
- Wrong battery type on program 05 — Growatt permits only US2 or Li for lithium
- A lead-acid bank charged above the 0.2 to 0.3C that Growatt gives as normal
- A blown fuse on the inverter mainboard
- Battery breaker off, or a loose or corroded battery terminal on a long DC run
The Pakistan factor
56 is the classic aftermath of a Pakistani tubular-to-lithium retrofit done without changing the inverter settings. A tubular bank happily accepts a high bulk charge current and installers set it that way by habit. A single lithium module does not, and its BMS will open the pack rather than accept it. The fault therefore shows up on the first bright, low-load afternoon after the upgrade, when PV pushes maximum charge into the battery — which is why it is so often reported as "the new battery disconnects in the afternoon" rather than as a settings problem. The second local cause is mechanical: long DC runs to an outdoor battery cabinet, with lugs that corrode quickly in humid coastal air around Karachi. That resistance shows up as a voltage the inverter cannot make sense of.
How to fix it
- Safe for a homeowner — check the obvious first. Is the battery breaker or isolator on, and has it tripped? A tripped DC breaker produces exactly this fault.
- Safe for a homeowner — read the battery voltage on the inverter display. A pack that has disconnected itself will read zero or nothing at the inverter even though the cells are fine. Leave any measurement at the battery terminals themselves to your installer.
- Safe for a homeowner — check the charge current on program 02 against the battery's own datasheet, and program 05 against the battery type. An installer who set 60 A on a pack rated for 25 A will trip the BMS every bright afternoon, and 56 will keep returning until that number is corrected.
- A BMS that has opened the pack has done its job. Do not force it closed by disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly, and never open the battery to reset it by hand or to bypass the BMS. If the pack will not re-close after the charge current is corrected and the system is restarted normally, that is a call to the battery supplier.
- The mainboard fuse check in Growatt's guide requires removing the cover and lifting out the MPPT board, with battery, PV and utility all isolated first. That is service-centre work. Do not attempt it.
- If the charge settings are correct and the pack re-closes but 56 returns, stop and call your installer. A repeating BMS trip is a real fault in the pack or in the DC wiring, not a nuisance alarm to be lived with.
