Knox Krypton Fault 05 — Output Is Short Circuited
⚠ DANGER — this fault involves lethal voltage. Do not attempt a DIY fix. Call a qualified technician.
What it means: The inverter has detected a short circuit on its AC output and shut down. Knox Krypton hybrids are rebadged Voltronic Power InfiniSolar units — an identification that comes from retailer listings and an exact specification match, never from Knox itself — and the InfiniSolar V IV fault table gives code 05 as "Output is short circuited", with the troubleshooting table describing it as "Output short circuited" and instructing you to check that the wiring is connected well and to remove the abnormal load. The important thing to understand is where the fault usually is. Code 05 is normally not a report about the inverter. It is the inverter telling you that something on the load side — a cable, a socket, a junction box, an appliance — is presenting a dead short, and that it has disconnected rather than feed current into it. A short circuit is a fire and shock hazard in its own right, whatever the inverter does next.
Why does Knox show 05?
- A faulty appliance or a damaged appliance flex — the single most common cause, and the easiest to find
- Water or moisture in an outdoor junction box, a rooftop conduit or a socket on an exterior wall
- A nail, screw or drill through a wall chase that has bridged live and neutral
- Rodent damage to cabling in a ceiling void or conduit
- Live and neutral shorted at a socket or switch after DIY rewiring, or a loose strand bridging terminals
- A genuinely failed output stage in the inverter, which is the least likely case but not impossible
The Pakistan factor
Code 05 in Pakistan is usually a wiring story, not an inverter story. Monsoon is the obvious season for it — water in a rooftop conduit, a junction box on an exterior wall with a cracked lid, or a DB in a stairwell that takes rain through a vent. Outside the monsoon, the recurring causes are the ones that come with how houses are built and modified here. Chases cut into plaster and filled without protective conduit are easy to hit later with a nail for a picture hook or an air-conditioner bracket. Extension leads and multi-plug boards carrying motor loads they were never rated for melt at the plug. Water pumps, water coolers, and submersible pumps in a boring are notorious 05 sources because their cable spends its life wet. And the DIY additions that arrive with every load-shedding season — a socket run to the roof for a fan, a temporary lead to the tube well — are done live, in a hurry, and rarely in conduit. There is one more Pakistani habit that turns this fault dangerous. When an inverter keeps tripping, the local reflex is to keep restarting it, or to have the breaker "checked" and replaced with a bigger one. Both are the wrong direction. The breaker and the inverter are agreeing with each other that something on your output is shorted, and the correct response is to find it, not to overrule them.
How to fix it
- Stop and check for the dangerous version first. If you can smell burning insulation, see scorching or melted plastic at any socket, switch, distribution board or junction box, or hear repeated relay clatter, do not restart the inverter and do not go looking for the fault yourself. Switch off at the main and call a qualified electrician now. A short circuit that has already produced heat has already produced a fire risk.
- Safe for a homeowner — unplug everything. Not "everything important", everything. Water pumps, water coolers, welders, washing machines, extension leads, chargers, the lot. The most common cause of 05 is a single failed appliance or a damaged flex, and clearing the output before you restart is both the diagnosis and the safest step.
- Safe for a homeowner — turn off every load breaker in the distribution board that the inverter feeds, so the inverter restarts into a genuinely dead output.
- Safe for a homeowner — restart once, properly and once only. Switch off the AC output breaker, then the PV isolator, then the battery breaker. Wait a few minutes. Power up in reverse order. If code 05 still appears with every load breaker off and nothing plugged in, the fault is on the inverter side of the board and you should stop here — that is the case for a technician.
- Safe for a homeowner — if the inverter comes up clean into a dead output, bring the circuits back one breaker at a time, waiting a few seconds between each. The breaker that brings 05 back names the circuit. Leave it off and call an electrician to trace it. Then do the same with the appliances on that circuit, plugging them back one at a time.
- That is the end of the homeowner path. Do not open a socket, a switch, a junction box or the distribution board to look for the short. Do not "test" a suspect circuit by holding a wire. Do not bypass or wedge a breaker that keeps tripping, and do not replace a breaker with a larger one so it stops nuisance-tripping — that removes the protection and leaves the short in place.
- Do not keep power-cycling the inverter to see if it clears. Each restart drives fault current into the short and into the inverter's output stage. One restart is diagnosis; six restarts turn a cable fault into a board replacement, and can turn a hot joint into a fire.
- Qualified electrician for the house side, qualified installer or Knox service for the inverter side. If the circuit is found and repaired and 05 still fires into a dead output, the output stage has failed and the unit goes to a service centre.
