Osaka Tubular low-gravity — Hydrometer Reading Below Specification

What it means: This is a symptom identifier, not an Osaka fault code. Osaka tubular batteries publish no fault codes at all, so SolarNevs names these pages after the symptom you can actually observe. Specific gravity is the density of the acid in each cell, and on a flooded battery it is the most honest measure of state of charge there is — resting voltage can be fooled by a surface charge, gravity cannot. Osaka's data sheet gives the scale for its own tubular line: 1.260 at 25 degrees C is a full battery, 1.220 is 75 percent, 1.190 is 50 percent, 1.150 is 25 percent and 1.120 is discharged. A cell reading well below 1.260 after a completed charge means the battery is not getting full, or the plate material is no longer converting. It does not mean the hydrometer is wrong.

Almost nobody in the Pakistani retail chain sells a hydrometer with the battery, and almost no installer records a baseline reading at commissioning. That makes low gravity the most under-used diagnosis in this market — a cheap hydrometer would settle most of the "the shop sold me a fake battery" arguments in ten minutes, and it is the only way to tell a genuinely defective unit from a bank that has simply never been charged properly. It also matters for warranty. Osaka publishes no warranty terms on its own product pages, so any claim is decided at the shop that sold you the battery, on the invoice and whatever evidence you bring — and routine deep discharge is the standard ground for rejecting a claim. Take the readings before you start the argument.

How to fix it

  1. Protect yourself before you protect the battery. A hydrometer draws live sulfuric acid up into a glass tube, an arm's length from your face, over cells that are venting hydrogen. Charger off, room ventilated, gloves and full eye protection on, no flame or spark, and a jug of clean water within reach in case of a splash. EnerSys' flooded manual is blunt about why — battery gases can explode and cause blindness. Never draw a reading from a battery that is hot or bubbling hard.
  2. Take the reading properly — after a completed charge, with the bank rested at float voltage for one to two hours, and corrected for temperature. Rolls specifies exactly this timing. A reading taken mid-charge or on a hot battery is not a diagnosis.
  3. Do not take a reading within several days of adding water. EnerSys warns that complete mixing takes several days in antimony cells and several weeks in calcium cells.
  4. Record every cell, not just the bank. What matters is the spread. Rolls' thresholds — cells varying by more than 0.025 to 0.030 indicate sulphation or charge imbalance and call for a corrective equalization, and a spread greater than 0.030 across parallel strings means the strings are not charging evenly.
  5. If every cell is uniformly low, with a spread under about 0.020, the bank is simply not being charged enough. That is a charger-settings job for your installer, against Osaka's own numbers — 14.4-14.7V per 12V unit on cycle duty, 13.8-14.2V on standby, and 14.1-14.4V boost.
  6. Never adjust gravity by adding acid. EnerSys is explicit that under normal conditions you only add water, never acid, commercial additives or other solutions, and warns that inexperienced people should never try to replace lost sulfuric acid. Adding acid hides the fault, damages the plates and can void your warranty.
  7. Equalization is the correct treatment for a sulphated or imbalanced bank, but it is a controlled overcharge and it belongs to your installer. Rolls warns that equalizing a bank containing a failed cell forces a severe overcharge onto the remaining cells and can damage them permanently, and that unnecessary equalization deteriorates healthy cells.
  8. If gravity stays below specification after a properly completed charge and a supervised equalization, ask for a load test. A cell that will not come up is a replacement decision, not a settings change.
