Pylontech US-Series BMS-COMM — Inverter Cannot Talk to the Battery BMS

What it means: The inverter has lost, or never established, its CAN or RS485 link to the Pylontech BMS. Pylontech does not print a numeric error code for this — the battery itself usually looks perfectly healthy, with a green RUN light and the red ALM light off, while the inverter reports a battery or BMS communication fault, shows a nonsense state of charge, or falls back to a fixed voltage charge profile. In almost every case this is a configuration or cabling fault, not a battery fault. It matters because Pylontech's own manual states that the battery system requires properly established communication with the inverter, and correct settings on the inverter, in order to run safely. Without the handshake the inverter has no charge-current limit, no discharge-current limit and no true state of charge from the pack.

Why does Pylontech show BMS-COMM?

The Pakistan factor

Most hybrid inverters sold in Pakistan under local brand names are Voltronic Axpert derivatives, and this is where the dealer conversation goes wrong. Pylontech's compatibility list does clear the Voltronic Axpert series over RS485 at 9600 baud, so a dealer can say truthfully that Pylontech works with the inverter — but the footnote is the part that decides your install, because only the VM III and King types actually support RS485 communication and every other Axpert type is manual-settings only. Ask for the exact type in writing before you buy, not the brand. The second local factor is the cable. Comms leads are routinely made up on site from whatever LAN patch cable is in the van, and the US-series port requires pins 1 to 3 to be empty, which a normal patch lead does not honour. The third is what no-comms costs you later. The BMS keeps its own operation record, and a distributor investigating a failed module will read that log. A pack that has been charged blind on a manual profile carries the evidence of it, and Pylontech's manual already excludes warranty for damage caused by connecting the battery to a faulty or incompatible inverter. Get the handshake, or get the manual limits in writing.

How to fix it

  1. Safe for a homeowner — look at the battery before you look at the inverter. If the green RUN light is on and the red ALM light is off, the pack is not in fault or protection, and what you have is a communication or configuration problem. Write that down before you call anyone, because it changes who needs to come out.
  2. Safe for a homeowner — find your exact inverter model in Pylontech's own compatibility list (Ver 2.40, last updated 15 August 2025) and read the COMM column. It tells you whether that inverter talks to Pylontech over CAN or over RS485, and at what baud rate. If your inverter is not on the list at all, no amount of cable swapping will produce a handshake, and Pylontech's safety instructions prohibit connecting the battery to a faulty or incompatible inverter.
  3. Safe for a homeowner — if you are on a Voltronic Axpert platform, which is the base of a great many Pakistani-branded hybrids, check the type and not just the brand. Pylontech's footnote is specific that only the VM III and King types have RS485 communication with its batteries and that every other Axpert type runs on manual settings. If yours is one of the others there is no handshake to establish, and the conversation with your installer is about safe manual charge and discharge limits instead.
  4. Installer work — confirm the cable is in the correct labelled port on the battery, A/CAN or B/RS485 to match the protocol the inverter expects, and that the run to the inverter starts at the master module, the one with Link Port 0 empty.
  5. Installer work — check the comms lead pin by pin with a cable tester. Pins 1 to 3 must be empty. Pylontech's own troubleshooting instruction is to connect CAN-H, CAN-L and GND only and not to connect other pins to the inverter. A site-made 8-pin patch lead is the single most common reason a system that looks correctly wired communicates nothing.
  6. Installer work — set DIP1 for the baud rate the inverter needs and restart the battery, and set DIP2 to 0 for a single group. Remember the manual's warning that the DIP block is physically reversed.
  7. Do not accept no-comms as a permanent state. If communication genuinely cannot be established because the inverter does not support it, the installer must set the charge voltage inside the manufacturer's window of 52.5 to 53.5 Vdc and a discharge cut-off above 44.5 V by hand, and you should have those figures written on the commissioning sheet. Leaving the inverter on a lead-acid or generic-lithium profile instead is how packs get over-charged.
  8. If the port, cable, pinout, DIP switches and inverter protocol are all correct and the link still will not establish, stop there. Do not open the battery. Call your installer or the Pylontech distributor and give them the inverter model and firmware version, the battery model, and the DIP switch positions.
