Pylontech US-Series MOSFAIL — Buzzer and Solid Red Alarm at Power-On

What it means: The module sounds its buzzer and shows a solid red ALM light as soon as it is switched on. MOSFAIL is the manufacturer's own term for one of the two causes below, not something the battery displays — the US-series front panel carries only RUN, ALM and SOC lights and a buzzer, and shows no fault code at all, so this fault is identified by its sound and light signature. Pylontech's US-series troubleshooting gives two causes for this exact signature, and both are serious. The first is reverse connection of the power cables, meaning positive and negative have been swapped somewhere between the battery and the inverter or between modules. The second is MOSFAIL, a failure of the BMS power MOSFETs that make and break the battery's own charge and discharge path. The manufacturer separates them with one test — power everything down, disconnect all power cables, and switch on a single module with nothing connected to it. If the alarm goes away it was a reverse connection. If the buzzer still sounds, the BMS switch itself has failed. Note the difference from a flashing red light with the buzzer and all LEDs flashing, which is high voltage protection and a completely different fault.

Why does Pylontech show MOSFAIL?

Reverse connection is a wiring-shop fault and it is common wherever lugs are crimped on site and both cables come off the same drum in the same colour. Pylontech's US-series uses colour-coded self-locking connectors specifically to make this mistake hard, but locally-made replacement leads and extension links defeat that protection completely, and they are exactly what gets fitted when a bank is expanded or a rack is moved. The other local route into this fault is a module that has already survived something — a heavy over-current, or the classic dropped spanner across the terminals during a rack expansion — and comes back with the MOS stage damaged. It may then run apparently normally for weeks before failing on a power-on. Because the manufacturer's own diagnostic requires disconnecting live power cables from a 48 V lithium bank, this is one fault where the correct homeowner action really is to switch everything off and wait for a qualified installer, even if that means a night without backup.

How to fix it

  1. Stop. A buzzer with a solid red alarm at power-on is not a settings problem and not something to work around. Reverse polarity on a 48 V lithium bank can produce a very high fault current, and the module's own label warns of arc flash and shock hazard from the DC voltage inside.
  2. Safe for a homeowner, and the only homeowner step here — switch everything off. The inverter first, then the battery's power switch, and the front-panel breaker on a US5000-B. Then leave it alone and call your installer.
  3. Do not try to check the polarity yourself by pulling power connectors. The US-series power connectors are self-locking and live, they require the lock button to be held while pulling, and the manufacturer's procedure begins with powering off all batteries and inverters and disconnecting the breaker first. It is written for a technician.
  4. Installer work, following the manufacturer's sequence — power off all batteries and inverters, disconnect the breaker, disconnect all power cables, and inspect the power ports for damage. Then switch on a single module with nothing connected to it.
  5. Installer work — if the isolated module powers up with no alarm, the fault was in the wiring and it was a reverse connection. Pylontech's instruction even in this case is still to switch the module off and contact the distributor, because a module that has taken a reverse connection needs checking before it goes back into service.
  6. Installer work — if the buzzer still sounds on a single module with nothing connected to it, that is MOSFAIL. Switch it off and contact the distributor. There is no field repair for this.
  7. Do not open the module and do not let anyone fit a replacement BMS board on site. Pylontech prohibits opening, repairing or disassembling the battery by anyone other than Pylontech or a party it has authorised, and states it accepts no responsibility for the consequences.
  8. If anything is hot, discoloured, deformed or smells unusual, treat it as a damaged battery — keep people away from it and tell the distributor those symptoms explicitly when you call.
