SolarMax F02 — Over-Temperature Shutdown
What it means: Something inside the inverter has passed 100 °C and the unit has shut down to protect itself. SolarMax's troubleshooting table is specific about the number and the cause — "internal temperature of inverter component is over 100 °C; check whether the air flow of the unit is blocked or whether the ambient temperature is too high." In almost every case F02 is an installation and environment problem, not a fault in the electronics. Verified against SolarMax's SM-ORION-DUAL-4KW manual, which covers the Axpert-class SolarMax hybrids (ORRA, SOLON, ORION, FALCON).
Why does SolarMax show F02?
- Mounted in a store room, cupboard, stairwell or box with no ventilation
- Less clearance than the manual asks for — roughly 20 cm at each side and roughly 50 cm above and below
- Fan locked or heatsink clogged with dust (see F01), so the machine cannot shed heat
- Room temperature above the model's ceiling. SolarMax's own 4 kW general specification stops at 50 °C, the ORION ULTRA datasheet also stops at 50 °C, and the ONYX UL derates above 45 °C
- Running at or near rated load through the hottest hours of the day
- Direct afternoon sun on the wall the inverter is bolted to, or a west-facing or roof-level mounting position
The Pakistan factor
F02 is the Pakistani summer fault. A machine whose own datasheet stops at 50 °C is routinely mounted in a closed store room or a roof-level utility box that goes well past that in June and July in Lahore, Multan, Jacobabad and Karachi — and the inverter is usually working hardest at exactly the moment the room is hottest, because load shedding has just started. Three local habits make it worse. Mounting on a plywood or chipboard back-board, which the manual forbids outright. Boxing the inverter into a cupboard to keep dust off. And sizing the system to the nameplate without allowing for derating in heat. A 10 kW inverter in a hot cupboard is not a 10 kW inverter.
How to fix it (safe to try yourself)
- Do not simply restart it and walk away. Note what was running when it tripped and what time of day it happened — F02 almost always has a pattern.
- Switch off the heavy loads, then let the inverter sit powered down for at least half an hour before restarting. Restarting a hot unit into the same load just repeats the trip.
- Leave program 07, auto restart when over temperature occurs, on its factory setting of Restart disable until you know why it is overheating. Auto-restarting into a blocked heatsink cooks the same components over and over.
- Measure the clearances against the manual, roughly 20 cm each side and roughly 50 cm above and below, and clear anything stacked around, above or beneath the unit.
- Look at the room, not just the inverter. If the space regularly sits above 45–50 °C, no setting fixes that. Add a wall or exhaust fan, open a vent, or have the unit moved to a cooler, shaded internal wall.
- Clean the fan grille from the outside only, exactly as for F01. Never open the case.
- Check what it is bolted to. SolarMax's manual says the unit is suitable for mounting on concrete or other non-combustible surface only, and not on flammable construction materials. If yours is screwed to a wooden board, chipboard, or a wall lined with foam or thermopore, that is a fire risk and needs an installer to remount it before you run it again.
- If F02 still trips with the fan running, clearances correct and the room below 45 °C, stop and call your dealer. At that point the temperature sensor or a power component is failing and there is nothing left for you to fix.
