SolarMax F03 — Battery Voltage Too High
⚠ DANGER — this fault involves lethal voltage. Do not attempt a DIY fix. Call a qualified technician.
What it means: The inverter sees a DC voltage on its battery terminals above the safe window and has stopped. SolarMax's troubleshooting table splits F03 into two different problems with two different answers. If the battery is genuinely being over-charged the manual says return the inverter to a repair centre; if the battery voltage is simply too high for the machine it says check that the specification and quantity of batteries meet requirements. The first of those is an inverter fault that is actively damaging your battery bank, which is why this page is rated dangerous rather than DIY. Verified against SolarMax's SM-ORION-DUAL-4KW manual (Axpert-class SolarMax hybrids — ORRA, SOLON, ORION, FALCON).
Why does SolarMax show F03?
- Wrong bank configuration — the wrong number of blocks in series for the inverter's nominal battery voltage, which is the manual's own first check
- A second charging source pushing the bank up at the same time, such as a separate MPPT charge controller, a standalone mains charger, or a generator charger
- Battery type in program 05 not matching the battery actually fitted. SolarMax's manual lists AGM (default), Flooded, User-Defined, Pylontech, Lib and LIC
- Program 05 set to User-Defined with bulk, float or cut-off voltages (programs 26, 27, 29) entered above what the battery maker allows
- A lithium BMS that has lost communication, leaving the inverter to charge on a fixed voltage profile instead of following the pack
- The inverter's charging stage stuck on — the manual's "battery is over-charged" branch, which is a fault in the machine itself
The Pakistan factor
The most common local version of F03 is a DIY upgrade — a tubular bank swapped for lithium by whoever was cheapest, with program 05 left on AGM and the BMS communication cable never connected, so the inverter charges to a lead-acid voltage into a lithium pack. The second version is a hybrid of two eras, where an old standalone charge controller or mains charger is left in circuit after a solar retrofit and two chargers push the same bank with no coordination. Both are made more dangerous by the standard Pakistani battery cupboard — unventilated, indoors, often under a staircase, sometimes with the inverter in the same box. Hydrogen from an over-charged flooded bank in that space is an explosion risk, and a lithium pack in that space has nowhere to dump heat.
How to fix it
- Stop the charging first. Switch the inverter off, open the AC input breaker and open the PV isolator so nothing can push more energy into the bank while you work out what is happening.
- Read the battery voltage from the LCD and write it down alongside what the pack is supposed to be. Do not open the battery, do not remove a cell link, and do not disconnect a lithium pack that is under load.
- Count the batteries and confirm the series and parallel arrangement matches the inverter's nominal battery voltage. This is the manufacturer's own first check. If it does not match, it is an installation error — call the installer who wired it. Rewiring a live battery bank is not a homeowner task; a dropped spanner across two terminals is an arc flash.
- Check program 05 against the battery you actually own. If you have a lithium pack and program 05 says AGM or Flooded, that is very likely your fault. The correct lithium setting is the one your battery supplier specifies — ask them, do not guess between Pylontech, Lib and LIC.
- If program 05 is set to User-Defined, have your installer compare programs 26, 27 and 29 against the battery manufacturer's datasheet. Do not raise them to make the fault go away. Those three numbers are the only thing standing between your charger and an over-charged pack.
- Look for a second charger. A separate solar charge controller or a mains charger left wired onto the same bank is a common cause and needs to be removed or coordinated by an installer.
- If the configuration and settings are right and the voltage still climbs, stop and leave the system off. SolarMax's own remedy for a genuine over-charge is to return the unit to a repair centre. Over-charging a flooded or tubular bank vents hydrogen into the room; over-charging lithium is a thermal-runaway path, and the BMS cut-off is a last line of defence, not a normal operating limit.
- If a battery is hot to the touch, swollen, leaking or smells of rotten eggs, do not restart the system and do not charge it. Ventilate the room, keep every flame and spark away, and call the battery supplier and a qualified installer. This is the point at which F03 stops being a settings problem.
