SolarMax F04 — Battery Voltage Too Low
What it means: The battery bank has fallen below the inverter's cut-off, so the unit has stopped drawing from it rather than damage it further. SolarMax's manual quotes the thresholds per cell, not per pack. Below roughly 1.91 V per cell the inverter lights up for about three seconds during start-up and then shuts down completely; below roughly 1.4 V per cell it will not respond at all. A 12 V lead-acid block is six cells, so 1.91 V per cell is about 11.5 V at the block. The same condition seen while running shows first as warning 04, "low battery", with one beep every second. Verified against SolarMax's SM-ORION-DUAL-4KW manual (Axpert-class SolarMax hybrids — ORRA, SOLON, ORION, FALCON).
Why does SolarMax show F04?
- The bank is simply flat after a long outage or several dull days
- Bank undersized for the evening load, so it is deep-cycled every night
- Output source priority set to SBU with the back-to-utility setpoint (program 12) too low, so the grid never takes over in time
- Charging is not actually happening — charger source priority (program 16) set to Solar first with too little PV, or the utility charging current (program 11) set low
- Ageing lead-acid or tubular bank that reads fine at rest but collapses under load
- Loose, corroded or undersized battery cabling causing a large voltage drop under load
- A lithium BMS that has cut the pack off on its own low-voltage protection
- Reversed battery polarity, which the manual lists as a cause of a completely dead display
The Pakistan factor
F04 is the load-shedding fault. Long outages, banks sized for a two-hour cut rather than a six-hour one, and second-hand tubular batteries sold as new all end in the same place. Two local details make it worse than it needs to be. First, undersized and unlugged battery cable — on a 48 V bank the volt drop across a bad joint at full load can trip the cut-off while the battery itself is still half full, and the joint is also a fire risk. Second, installers routinely set the back-to-utility point low to advertise longer backup, which turns every outage into a deep discharge and takes years off a lead-acid bank. If your backup time has halved in twelve months, F04 is telling you about the battery, not about the inverter.
How to fix it (safe to try yourself)
- First check whether anything is actually charging. If there is no mains and no useful sun, F04 is not a fault at all — the bank is flat and needs charging before the inverter will do anything.
- Switch off the heavy loads before you try to restart. A weak bank that is asked for a pump or an iron will trip straight back to F04.
- Look at the battery cabling you can see without opening anything, for loose lugs, green or white corrosion, terminals that are warm, or cable that is visibly thin for the current. SolarMax's own first instruction here is to check that the batteries and wiring are connected well. Have an electrician retighten or replace it — battery cable carries hundreds of amps and is not something to work on live.
- If the inverter is set to SBU priority, ask your installer to review programs 12 and 13. Raising program 12, the point at which it goes back to utility, makes the grid take over earlier and stops the nightly deep discharge. Do not lower it to squeeze out more runtime — that is how a bank is killed in a season.
- If it is a lead-acid or tubular bank several years old and F04 is arriving earlier every month, the bank is worn out. The manual's remedy is exactly that — recharge the battery, and if it will not hold, replace it.
- If it is lithium and the pack has gone to sleep on BMS low-voltage protection, use the wake-up procedure your battery manufacturer publishes, or have them do it. Do not open the pack, do not bypass or "reset" the BMS by disconnecting it, and never put a bench charger straight onto the cells. A lithium pack that has sat flat may be damaged, and charging a damaged pack is how fires start.
- If the display is completely dead with no indication at all, stop. The manual lists reversed battery polarity as one cause of that, and getting DC polarity wrong is an installer-level fault, not something to keep re-trying.
