SolarMax F05 — Output Short Circuit

⚠ DANGER — this fault involves lethal voltage. Do not attempt a DIY fix. Call a qualified technician.

What it means: The inverter measured a short across its AC output and shut the output down. SolarMax's fault table records F05 simply as "output short circuited", and its troubleshooting table gives the remedy as "check if wiring is connected well and remove abnormal load". This is the protection working. Until proved otherwise the fault is on the load side of the inverter — the house wiring, a socket, or an appliance — and every restart re-energises it. Verified against SolarMax's SM-ORION-DUAL-4KW manual (Axpert-class SolarMax hybrids — ORRA, SOLON, ORION, FALCON).

Why does SolarMax show F05?

The Pakistan factor

Two Pakistani conditions turn F05 from rare to routine. The first is monsoon damp in old masonry — rubber and PVC insulation that has been in a damp wall for twenty years fails at exactly the point where a cable enters a box, and the first sign is an inverter that trips the moment it starts. The second is the extension-lead habit, with daisy-chained boards feeding fans, chargers and coolers off one socket, in a market where the boards themselves are often unbranded and unfused. Add rooftop water ingress into outdoor fittings and rodents in conduit and you have most of these accounted for. The dangerous local response is the one to avoid — many households treat a repeat trip as a nuisance and answer it by uprating the breaker, which removes the only thing protecting the cable inside the wall.

How to fix it

  1. Turn the inverter's AC output breaker OFF and leave it off. Do not keep restarting into a possible short. Each restart is another arc at the fault point, and arcs are what start fires.
  2. Unplug everything on the backup side and switch off the individual MCBs before you go any further.
  3. Look and smell, from outside only, for a burning or fishy plastic smell, a browned or melted socket, a blackened MCB, a tripped RCD, or scorch marks around a fitting or switch. If you find any of these, stop here and call a qualified electrician. Do not energise that circuit again, and do not open the fitting yourself.
  4. If nothing is visibly wrong, restore power once with every load off and every MCB open. If F05 does not return with zero load, the fault is in one of the circuits or one of the appliances, not in the inverter.
  5. Bring the circuits back one at a time at the MCB, waiting between each. When F05 returns, that circuit is the faulty one. Leave it off and get an electrician to it. Do not keep switching it back on to check again.
  6. Never replace a breaker or fuse with a bigger one, and never bypass one, to keep the circuit alive. SolarMax's own line-mode specification lists a circuit breaker as the output short-circuit protection; defeating it turns a shutdown into a fire.
  7. If F05 latches with the output breaker open and nothing connected, the fault is inside the inverter. Shut the whole system down — AC, PV and battery — and call your dealer or a SolarMax service centre. Do not open the case. It holds a dangerous charge after shutdown, and the manual's safety section says only qualified service personnel may service the unit.
