SolarMax F51 — Over Current or Surge
What it means: The inverter's over-current protection fired. Unlike F07, which times out after the load has been too high for a while, F51 is instantaneous — a current spike sharp enough that the unit shut down on the spot. SolarMax's troubleshooting table allows exactly one attempt at recovery, "restart the unit, if the error happens again, please return to repair center." That single sentence is the whole DIY path for this code, and it is the reason this page stops where it does. Verified against SolarMax's SM-ORION-DUAL-4KW manual (Axpert-class SolarMax hybrids — ORRA, SOLON, ORION, FALCON).
Why does SolarMax show F51?
- A very large inrush current, from a motor, compressor, water pump or transformer-input device starting while the inverter is already loaded
- A short or near-short on the output that clears itself instantly, so you see F51 rather than F05
- Several high-inrush loads restarting together, which is what happens the moment the grid comes back after a cut
- A transfer between grid and inverter made with a large load already connected
- Damaged output-stage components inside the inverter, in which case the restart will not hold
The Pakistan factor
The distinctly Pakistani trigger for F51 is the restoration surge. When a feeder comes back after load shedding, every deep freezer, fridge, air conditioner and water pump in the house tries to start within the same few seconds, and the transfer happens straight into that. The second is the borewell or booster pump, a direct-on-line induction motor whose starting current is several times its running current, connected to the backup side because water matters during an outage. The third is the repair culture. Because F51 clears on a restart the first two or three times, households learn to just switch it off and on, and the unit reaches the workshop only after the power stage has been re-energised into a fault a dozen times. The manual gives you one restart for a reason.
How to fix it
- Switch off the heavy loads and open the output breaker before you restart. Restarting into the load that caused the spike simply repeats it.
- Restart the inverter once. That is the manufacturer's instruction, and "once" is the important word in it.
- If it comes back up and stays up, reintroduce the loads one at a time and find the item that triggers it. A pump or compressor whose inrush is beyond the inverter needs to be moved off the backup side or given a soft starter, which is an installer's job and not a setting.
- If F51 returns, stop. SolarMax's own instruction is to return the unit to a repair centre. Repeated power-cycling into an internal fault destroys whatever is left of the power stage and is a genuine fire risk.
- If F51 appears with no load connected at all, treat it as an internal fault from the start. Shut the system down — AC, PV and battery — and call the dealer.
- Do not open the inverter, and do not let an unauthorised repair shop replace power components while it is still in warranty. SolarMax prints its parts term on the datasheet, two years on the ORION ULTRA and five on the ONYX UL, and publishes no warranty policy document, so route the repair through the dealer named on your invoice and get the authorisation in writing before anyone opens the case.
