MG ZS EV

The MG ZS EV is a five-seat, front-wheel-drive battery-electric compact SUV (BEV — no engine, no fuel tank, no self-charging mode) sold in Pakistan in two facelift "MCE" variants, priced at Rs 9,690,000 ex-factory for the MCE Essence and Rs 14,999,000 for the MCE Long Range as listed on 26 July 2026. The Essence carries a 51.1 kWh pack and a 130 kW motor; the Long Range carries 72.6 kWh and 115 kW.

Do not confuse this with the MG ZS petrol SUV or the MG ZS HEV hybrid. Those are separate cars with combustion engines. The ZS EV is the plug-only one.

Variants and prices

An important flag: as of 26 July 2026 the ZS EV does not appear among the model pages on MG Motor Pakistan's own website, which currently shows the MG4 EV Urban, Binguo EV, Cyberster, HS Super Hybrid, HS Hybrid+, HS PHEV and U9. PakWheels and gari.pk still list live ZS EV prices. Specifications

Running cost per kilometre

Basis: 22 kWh per 100 km at the wall plug for the Essence — 51.1 kWh of grid energy over roughly 230 km of real range, charger losses and AC included. Formula: cost/km = (kWh per 100 km / 100) x tariff.

The Long Range at 23 kWh/100 km costs about 5% more per kilometre — the bigger battery is not more efficient, it just carries more energy.

One conflict worth knowing: PakWheels' April 2026 Lahore guide quoted public DC at Rs 40-45/kWh, while May 2026 operator surveys put PSO, Shell Recharge and Go Green at Rs 110-125/kWh. We use the operator-verified band because that is what buyers report paying. Shop around.

The SolarNevs line

Charging from your own rooftop is roughly Rs 0/km marginal. A 585 W panel makes about 2.3 kWh/day in Pakistani conditions.

Eight 585 W panels — about 4.7 kW of array — covers an 80 km/day commute in a ZS EV. Against Rs 30.14/km for a petrol equivalent, that array pays for itself on fuel alone faster than most owners expect.

Honest assessment

Pros. It is a proper SUV body with real rear-seat and boot space, which the cheaper hatchback EVs are not. 130 kW in the Essence makes it genuinely quick. The 8-year / 150,000 km battery warranty is the longest coverage MG offers in Pakistan. The Essence's Rs 1.3 million price cut in September 2025 made it competitive against BYD for the first time.

Cons. The Long Range at Rs 14,999,000 is very hard to justify: Rs 5,309,000 buys roughly 87 km of extra real range. Owner reviews consistently flag two things — infotainment lag with random reboots, and slow, expensive parts supply when something non-standard fails. And the range figures Pakistani sellers quote (360 km, 505 km) are not WLTP; the same packs are rated 320 km and 440 km WLTP globally, so the local numbers are inflated before you account for Pakistani conditions at all.

Who should buy it. The Essence at Rs 9,690,000 suits a family that wants SUV space, charges at home or from solar, and drives inside one city with occasional intercity runs. Skip the Long Range unless you genuinely do 250 km+ days and cannot charge midway.

Pakistan reality check

Real vs claimed range. Pakistani listings quote 360 km (Essence) and 505 km (Long Range) without naming a test cycle. The identical 51.1 kWh and 72.6 kWh packs are certified at 320 km and 440 km WLTP internationally — so the local figures behave like NEDC or CLTC claims, which are more optimistic than WLTP to begin with. Apply the roughly 28% Pakistani highway derate to the WLTP numbers and you get about 230 km (Essence) and about 317 km (Long Range) at 110-120 km/h with the AC running. City figures are better.

Battery replacement and warranty. The pack is warranted 8 years / 150,000 km on both variants. MG Capital's aftersales page separately advertises a blanket 4-year / 100,000 km vehicle warranty with no EV-specific clause, which is a genuine inconsistency — insist the EV terms appear on your invoice. MG Pakistan publishes no replacement price for the ZS EV battery pack. Figures circulating online come from Indian sources and Indian rupees. For a nine-year-old ZS EV in Pakistan, replacement cost is an unpriced risk, not a budget line.

Charging at home after the February 2026 net-billing switch. NEPRA's Prosumer Regulations 2026 replaced net metering with net billing on 9 February 2026. Surplus solar now sells to the grid at roughly Rs 11/unit while you import at Rs 50+. Exporting is a losing trade. Daytime self-consumption charging an EV is now the highest-value use of a Pakistani rooftop system, full stop.

Charging network. 72 NEECA licences issued since October 2024; somewhere between about 20 and 50 sites genuinely operational nationwide depending on the survey, almost all in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad/Rawalpindi. DISCO connections, meter installs and NOCs are what stalls the rest. A ZS EV Essence on a 230 km real range does not comfortably do Lahore to Islamabad and back without home charging at one end. Load-shedding will occasionally eat an overnight charge — set your charge timer and keep a buffer.

Monsoon and floods. The traction pack is sealed to IP67 class: 30 minutes at one metre, not indefinite immersion. The 12V system, body control modules and cabin harness are the weak points. Never restart a vehicle submerged above the wheels. Power it down, flatbed tow it, get certified inspection. Never park in a plaza basement during a monsoon alert.

Resale and battery health opacity. Pakistan has no standard for reporting battery state of health and a used-EV buyer pool measured in dozens. Buyers discount aggressively because they cannot verify pack condition. One documented Pakistani case saw an imported BYD lose roughly 25% of value in 2-3 years. Assume similar for a ZS EV, particularly the Rs 14,999,000 Long Range where the absolute rupee loss is largest.

Price context vs rivals

The BYD Atto 3 undercuts the ZS EV Essence by Rs 700,000 with a broadly comparable pack. The ZS EV answers with MG's 8-year battery warranty and a bigger dealer footprint. The Long Range answers nothing at Rs 14,999,000.
