Seres in Pakistan

Seres is a Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturer whose only officially sold model in Pakistan is the Seres 3, a five-seat compact electric SUV listed at Rs 8,390,000 ex-factory as of 26 July 2026. It is assembled locally in Lahore by Regal Automobiles Industries Limited (RAIL), the same company that assembles DFSK vehicles here, and it holds the distinction of being Pakistan's first locally assembled electric SUV — unveiled at Regal's Multan Road plant on 2 December 2024.

That is the entire Seres story here: one model, one variant, one assembler. Anything broader you read about Seres — its Huawei partnership, its AITO brand, its range-extender models — describes the Chinese market and has no bearing on what you can buy, insure or service in Pakistan today.

Who actually makes and sells it

Seres Group is a Chongqing-based manufacturer, best known for co-developing the AITO brand with Huawei. AITO is not sold in Pakistan, and neither is any other Seres model.

Here the relationship that matters is with Regal Automobiles Industries Limited, a Pak-China venture that assembles DFSK vehicles domestically and received approval to manufacture the Seres 3 locally. Assembly is what makes the price work: it avoids the completely-built-unit duties that push comparable BEVs past Rs 9M.

Practically, your dealer, warranty claim and service appointment all run through Regal's DFSK network, concentrated in Punjab and strongest in Lahore. If you live outside that footprint, verify your nearest EV-capable workshop before committing — high-voltage diagnostics are a different skill set, and technicians who have it are thin on the ground everywhere here.

One model, one variant. If a dealer offers a "Seres 3 Hybrid", a long-range version or a second battery size, they are describing a vehicle not on sale in Pakistan.

BEV, PHEV, HEV — get this right

Pakistani EV coverage conflates these constantly, and it is the most expensive mistake a first-time buyer makes:

  • BEV (battery electric) — battery and motor only. No engine, no fuel tank, no petrol bills. The Seres 3 is a BEV.
  • PHEV (plug-in hybrid) — battery plus petrol engine, chargeable from the wall, typically 40-80 km of electric range before the engine takes over.
  • HEV (conventional hybrid) — petrol car with a small battery that recovers braking energy. You cannot plug it in. It is a fuel-efficient petrol car, not an EV.
  • REEV / EREV (range extender) — battery drives the wheels, a petrol generator recharges the pack. Frequently mislabelled as an EV in local listings. The Deepal S05, often cross-shopped against the Seres 3, is one of these.

The Seres 3 has no engine of any kind and cannot be refuelled. If you cannot charge at home, it is the wrong car — no qualifier, no workaround.

What Seres ownership actually costs to run

As a BEV, its running cost is set entirely by the tariff you charge on. At the road-tested city consumption of 16.4 kWh/100 km:

Petrol is Rs 331.52/litre effective 24 July 2026. NEPRA cut the EV charging station base tariff to Rs 23.57/unit in April 2025.

The spread across that table is nearly six-fold, and it is the whole ballgame. Charged on public DC it saves little over petrol; charged from your own roof it costs essentially nothing to run. This is why we treat EVs and solar as one purchase, not two.

Why solar changed the maths in February 2026

On 9 February 2026, NEPRA replaced net metering with net billing. Surplus solar exported to the grid now earns roughly Rs 11 per unit, down from around Rs 26-27, while units you import still cost Rs 50 or more.

For anyone with a rooftop system the implication is direct: exporting is now a losing trade, and self-consumption is the only good use of midday generation. An EV is close to a perfect self-consumption load — large, flexible, schedulable into the solar peak. At 16.4 kWh/100 km, roughly four 585W panels (~2.3 kWh/day each here) cover 50 km of daily driving; seven cover 80 km.

If you have panels and are shopping for a Seres 3, charge between 10am and 4pm. Overnight grid charging throws away most of the advantage.

The uncomfortable parts

We do not sell cars and we take no dealer money, so here is what a showroom will not lead with.

The public charging network barely exists. As of January 2026 Pakistan had just over 20 operational public charging points nationwide against 13 NEECA licences issued. Targets are 240 stations this fiscal year and 3,000 by 2030, but the bottlenecks — grid connections, separate meters, DISCO NOCs, customs on imported chargers — are procedural and slow. Home charging is mandatory, and local load-shedding constrains when the car can charge.

Nobody has published a battery replacement price. Warranty is 5 years / 150,000 km on motor and battery, with battery coverage stated as extending to 8 years. What a replacement pack costs in year nine, landed and fitted here, is simply not public. Anyone quoting a confident figure is guessing - ask Regal in writing before you buy.

Claimed range is NEDC and optimistic. The 403 km figure uses the oldest and most generous test cycle. Owners report roughly 28% below claim on the motorway at speed with AC — about 280-300 km mixed, 210-220 km on a motorway run.

Resale is unproven. No established used market, and no Pakistani standard for certifying battery state-of-health at resale. A buyer in 2029 cannot verify what is left of your pack and will discount for it. Price that in now.

One model is a thin bet. A single-model brand with a young local network carries more parts and support risk than an established nameplate. That is the price of the cheapest electric SUV in the country.

Who Seres is for

The Seres 3 makes excellent sense for one specific household: rooftop solar installed, secure home parking on a dedicated circuit, a daily commute under 80 km, and a second petrol car for intercity travel. For that buyer, running costs fall to near zero and every limitation above stays invisible.

For anyone without home charging, driving mostly motorway, or needing one car to do everything, this is the wrong purchase — and the Rs 600,000 saving over a BYD Atto 3 will not compensate.
