Two independent price layers, both dated.
The first is ours. On 5 August 2026 our Saudi survey recorded two gel batteries at Dleel Al-Taqah (dlel.sa), a Riyadh-registered specialty retailer selling at public add-to-cart prices: a 40Ah unit at SAR 275 and a 65Ah unit at SAR 425. Those rows sit in our Saudi battery price index with the day they were taken, which is the whole point of running a survey rather than repeating a number.
The second is published listings at thepowerq.com, a Saudi store dedicated to batteries. Its in-stock gel range at the time of checking was led by a EURONET 12V 150Ah at SAR 800 (August 2026) and an SCB 12V 150Ah at SAR 915 (August 2026). Lithium units were listed but out of stock: an NNP 12.8V 200Ah at SAR 1,350 (August 2026) and an NPP 25.6V 200Ah at SAR 3,500 (August 2026). An out-of-stock listing is a reference point, not a buying figure.
What is the actual unit rate — riyals per amp-hour?
This is the number that lets you compare batteries that are not the same size, and almost nobody publishes it.

Read down the right-hand column and the curve is unmistakable: the bigger the battery, the lower the rate per amp-hour. That is what you would expect — case, terminals, plate handling and freight barely scale with capacity, so spreading them over more amp-hours drives the unit rate down.
What makes this worth publishing is that the curve holds across two entirely unconnected sellers. Our own survey rows at dlel.sa and the published listings at thepowerq.com were not coordinated, are not the same brands, and still land on the same shape. When two independent sources agree without agreeing to agree, you can use the result. A Saudi gel quote landing far outside SAR 5 to SAR 7 per amp-hour in August 2026 is one you should ask questions about.
One caveat we will not paper over: our two survey rows state amp-hours without a voltage on the listing text, and this class of battery is conventionally 12V. Confirm the voltage on the label before wiring anything to it.
Is gel or lithium actually cheaper?
The sticker says gel. The arithmetic says it depends, and the honest comparison needs one clearly-labelled assumption.
A lead-acid family battery — gel included — should not be routinely discharged much below half its nameplate capacity if you want it to last. Lithium iron phosphate is normally worked far harder, commonly to around 90 percent. Those two depth-of-discharge figures are industry convention, not a specification we verified for these specific units, so treat them as the assumption they are and check the datasheet for whatever you actually buy.

On those numbers the cheapest battery on the shelf is not the cheapest energy in the house. The lithium unit with more than double the gel unit's price delivers usable energy for roughly a third less per kilowatt-hour — before you account for cycle life, where lithium's advantage is larger again. We are not going to attach a cycle count to these particular SKUs because we did not verify their datasheets, but the direction is not controversial.
The practical takeaway: ask any Saudi installer to quote storage in usable kilowatt-hours, and do the division yourself if they will not.
Why does storage matter more in Saudi Arabia than elsewhere?
Because of net billing.
Saudi Arabia's small-scale solar framework credits exported electricity at a fixed rate that secondary reporting consistently puts at 7 halalas per kWh for residential customers — far below the residential import tariff. That is net billing, not net metering, and the difference is the entire argument for a battery. In a one-to-one net-metering market the grid behaves like a free battery, and storage is a comfort purchase. Under Saudi net billing, every kilowatt-hour you push to the grid earns a small credit while every kilowatt-hour you store and use in the evening avoids paying the full import rate. The gap between those two values is what a battery monetises.
That reframes the line item. Storage in Saudi Arabia is not an upsell bolted onto a solar quote — it is the component that decides whether the quote's payback claim is achievable at all.
How much storage does a Saudi household actually need?
Size to evening load, not to roof size. The energy you want in the battery is what the house consumes after the array stops producing and before it starts again — lights, fans, the air-conditioning duty cycle overnight, and any base load that runs regardless.
That is a very different sum from "how big is my system", and it is why the honest answer is a measurement rather than a rule of thumb. Read your own consumption profile off your SEC bill and, if you can, off a monitoring app for a few weeks before committing to a battery bank. Over-sizing storage in a net-billing market is expensive; under-sizing it quietly hands your surplus to the grid at 7 halalas.
Whatever the answer, get the inverter and battery compatibility confirmed in writing. Lithium batteries depend on the inverter communicating with their battery management system, and a mismatched pair is a much more expensive mistake than choosing the wrong capacity. What should you check before buying a battery in KSA?
Confirm the exact chemistry, voltage and amp-hour rating on the label, not just in the quote — our own survey found listings that state amp-hours without voltage, and that ambiguity has to be closed before anything is wired.
Confirm stock on the day. The Saudi battery market visibly turns over: every lithium unit in the comparison above was listed and unavailable at the time of checking. A price attached to stock that does not exist is a reference, not an offer.
Confirm who honours the warranty inside Saudi Arabia and for how long, in writing. And confirm the delivered price including VAT and freight before paying, because batteries are heavy and freight is not a rounding error.
