EV vs Petrol Calculator Pakistan — What You Would Actually Save Per Month

At July 2026 rates, a car covering 800 km a month burns about Rs 22,100 of petrol and about Rs 2,450 of off-peak electricity — a gap of roughly Rs 19,650 a month, or about Rs 235,800 a year. That is fuel only: no purchase price, no insurance, no battery replacement.

The two rates driving that gap are the pump price of Rs 331.52 a litre (24 July 2026) and the Rs 23.57 a unit EV charging tariff NEPRA approved in April 2025, down from Rs 45.55 — a cut of about 48%. Both are editable fields below, because both move, and because the Rs 23.57 is more contested than it looks: see the sourcing note under the worked example before you rely on it.

How this calculator works — the actual arithmetic

  1. Petrol cost = (km per month ÷ your car’s km per litre) × price per litre.
  2. EV cost = (km per month ÷ 100) × kWh per 100 km × electricity tariff.
  3. The default tariff is the off-peak EV rate of Rs 23.57/unit, not your household slab. Charging on a normal domestic connection during the day costs considerably more — see how to get the off-peak EV tariff at home.
  4. Nothing else is modelled. Maintenance, depreciation, insurance and the purchase-price gap are all outside this calculation.

Where these numbers come from

The Rs 23.57 tariff and the off-peak window are explained in EV charging cost per km: the off-peak tariff explained. The cut from Rs 45.55, approved in April 2025, is recorded in our home EV charger price guide.

And that guide is where this site openly disagrees with itself, so read this before you trust the Rs 2,451. Our home EV charger price guide states flatly that Rs 23.57 is the base tariff for licensed commercial charging stations under NEPRA category A-2(d), and that the domestic off-peak rate is Rs 34.53 a unit. Our off-peak tariff application guide says the opposite — that a Time-of-Use dual meter unlocks Rs 23.57 at home. We have not been able to settle which is right, so we are not going to quietly pick the cheaper one. Put Rs 34.53 into the tariff field and the same 800 km costs Rs 3,591 a month, Rs 4.49 a km, and the monthly saving falls from Rs 19,650 to Rs 18,510. That Rs 4.49 lands inside the Rs 3.50–4.50 per km band the cost-per-km guide reports from real owners, which is weak evidence that Rs 34.53 is the safer number to budget on.

The consumption default is optimistic too, and this one we can check against our own product pages rather than argue about. The calculator ships with 13 kWh/100 km. Not one electric car we publish is that efficient: across the electric cars we list, the figures run from 14.5 to 27.3 kWh/100 km with a median of 19 — the BYD Atto 3 page, for instance, publishes 18.6. Thirteen is roughly what you get by dividing an Atto 3 battery by its claimed NEDC range; 18.6 is what it actually uses. Put your own car’s published figure in the consumption field. At 19 kWh/100 km and the disputed Rs 23.57 tariff the cost is Rs 4.48 a km, which is also where the cost-per-km guide’s Rs 3.50–4.50 real-owner band lands.

The same applies in the other direction on petrol: 12 km/litre is a thirsty city figure. Enter your own tank-to-tank number rather than the brochure’s.

What this calculator does not know

  • The purchase-price gap. An EV that costs Rs 2–3 million more up front does not become cheaper because its fuel bill is lower — run the full ownership comparison in EV vs hybrid: 5-year cost of ownership.
  • Battery replacement, which is the single biggest tail risk in Pakistani EV ownership. Figures per car are in the EV battery replacement cost table.
  • Resale. See the EV resale value tracker for what one-year-old cars actually fetch.
  • Public DC charging, which is a different economic animal altogether and can run several times the home off-peak rate. If most of your charging will be public, the saving shrinks sharply.
  • Load shedding. Overnight off-peak charging assumes the grid is up overnight — charging an EV during load shedding covers the workarounds.

Is an EV actually cheaper than petrol in Pakistan?

On fuel alone, decisively — roughly Rs 3 per km against roughly Rs 22–28 per km for a petrol car at the July 2026 pump price of Rs 331.52 a litre. Whether it is cheaper overall depends on the purchase-price gap and battery replacement, neither of which this calculator models.

Does this calculator include the higher purchase price of an EV?

No. It compares fuel and electricity for the same distance and nothing else. Purchase price, insurance, depreciation and battery replacement are all excluded and are covered in the linked guides.
